Data Analysis:

What is data analysis?  It is when we collect information, display it in different ways and learn from it.

What are some of the ways we can display information? Bar graphs, circle graphs, tally marks, weather charts, calendars, pictographs, votes, line graphs, tables, Venn diagrams, mind maps.

Look at a graph.  What is it telling you?  What information can you learn from looking at this graph?

We have been working on Data Analysis throughout the year.  You child will need to understand what Data Analysis is and what it is for.  Your child will also need to be able to prepare tallies and a graph based on given information. Your child will need to ask a number of questions about their graph (e.g. “how many people like soccer? How many more people like football than hockey?  How many people were surveyed all together?  Is there a sport that no one likes? etc.).  They will also need to be able to accurately answer these questions.

Measurement:

Students will be understanding the concepts of time and organizing all of their important dates as we better understand the way a calendar works and how we can use adding and subtracting to find dates on a calendar. We will be using logical thinking to judge which non-standard units of measure will work best as we measure large and small objects around the classroom and use these measurements to compare and order things based on their overall size, length, width and height. Understanding and defining weight and mass will give students a better understanding of size and ties into our unit on Buoyancy and Boats!

Maths: Adding and Subtracting to 18

Students will be using strategies that they learned during the number exploration unit (Number relationships to 100) to identify methods of adding and subtracting numbers to 18. They will be working with objects around the classroom, pictures and diagrams, partners and groups to solve number problems. Grade 2J students have already begun to come up with clever number stories that can be solved using number sentences and by creating fact families!  Numbers have never been so much fun!

Mathematics:

Students will:
  • Develop number sense (numbers to 100),
  • Use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems,
  • Represent algebraic expressions (equality and inequality) in multiple ways,
  • Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems,
  • Describe the characteristics of 3D objects and 2D shapes, and analyse the relationships among them,
  • Collect, display and analyse data to solve problems.
